Dual-Fuel & Bi-Fuel Systems

Control Systems for Dual-Fuel & Bi-Fuel Engines

Dual-fuel engines are diesel engines designed or converted for operation on a gaseous fuel. When the engine operates outside normal conditions, the system is able to either reduce the gas flow or switch back to full diesel operation. The engine may be returned to original diesel operation at any time by disabling dual-fuel mode.

In Dual-Fuel and Bi-Fuel applications, the engine has two independent fuel systems.

Introducing natural gas into the air intake of diesel engines has many benefits:

  • Improved engine performance
  • Extended fuel supply; reduced diesel fuel storage capacity
  • Electronic control system efficiency – control algorithms continuously monitor the engine to maximize fuel efficiency.
  • Decreased dependence on imported oil

The re-emerging interest in the concept of dual-fuel engines is being driven by rising costs of diesel fuel, tighter restrictions on engine emissions, a desire to conserve fuel usage and save on maintenance and overall cost of operation.
